Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Lohri

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Lohri:

“Today, children across Punjab and all of Northern India will converge around the Lohri bonfire to hear tales of Dulla Bhatti – the legendary hero of Punjab. Renowned as a champion of the poor and a defender of the vulnerable, the stories of Dulla Bhatti’s adventures exemplify the spirit of hope and freedom that are central to Lohri.

“As families observe the winter solstice and welcome in the harvest, homes and hearts are filled with warmth. Celebrations include music and dancing as loved ones reflect together on the happy milestones of the year gone by, especially the joy of new marriages and the blessing of new children.

“Centuries on, the spirit of Dulla Bhatti’s generosity continues to live at the heart of the festivities. Harvest-time treats are shared, and gifts are exchanged with friends, neighbours and family members. Across many faiths and traditions, communities come together in harmony to share in the cheer around the Lohri fire and participate in the meaningful traditions that inspire deeper friendship and gratitude.

“Tonight, as offerings are thrown into the fire and prayers are lifted up for a prosperous year ahead, I hope that everyone celebrating is blessed with a spirit of peace.

“Happy Lohri!”
