Conservatives Call For Fair Treatment For Forest Firefighters

Ottawa, ON — Dane Lloyd, Conservative Shadow Minister for Emergency Preparedness, and Common Sense Conservatives are calling on the Liberal Government to add forest firefighters to the list of Public Safety Occupations.

Currently, the definition of firefighter under the National Occupational Classification does not list forest firefighters as a Public Safety Occupation. Since forest firefighters are considered silviculture and forestry workers, they are ineligible for the same potential retirement benefits as other kinds of firefighters.

“Canada’s Forest Firefighters are heroes who risk their personal health and safety to protect our communities during fire season,” said MP Lloyd. “It’s time the Liberal Government amend the definition of firefighter to reflect the sacrifices and risks taken on by our brave forest firefighters.”

Common Sense Conservatives are calling on the Liberal Government to right this wrong by amending the definition of firefighter under the National Occupational Classification to include forest firefighters.
